MAIZE CULTIVAR TRIAL RESULTS (2019/20 PRODUCTION SEASON)
Petru Fourie, Agricultural Economist & Research Coordinator

Grain SA, SANSOR and various seed companies formed a consortium to conduct the past production season’s (2019/20) maize cultivar evaluation trials. The primary objective of the trials is to provide producers, seed companies and agricultural advisers with independent, unbiased, and scientifically accurate information on the performance and adaptability of maize cultivars. Data is compared and presented relative to the current commercial cultivars grown in the producer's areas.

The correct choice of cultivars, considering the diverse climatic conditions, is of utmost importance to producers as it affects yield.Through supporting producers in their choice of adaptable cultivars, optimum yields can be obtained and the risk for yield losses can be managed better.

All cultivars entered into the trials were coded enabling the seed companies to receive coded trial packs, without any company-related information, ensuring anonymity across all regions.

GROW FOR GOLD NATIONAL YIELD COMPETITION

Grain SA launched the National Yield Competition which kicked off this year. The competition involved consultation with all seed companies which established a standard protocol and ensured all participating seed companies and grain producers were assessed at the same level and on the same criteria.

The Grow for Gold Awards Ceremony will be hosted in Gauteng on Thursday, 15 October at 10h30 with all the finalists and sponsors. Due to the COVID-19 limitations on numbers, the event will also be live streamed on the Grain SA YouTube channel.

We look forward to presenting the cream of the crop. Producers competed across four categories, including Maize, Soybean, Sunflower and Small-Scale Farmers with truly magnificent and record-yielding crops.
