Tina wants more black ‘boere’

06 May 2011
“We must demystify the notion that blacks are not interested in commercial farming. The more black boere we have, the better for the agriculture sector,” said minister of agriculture Tina Joemat-Pettersson. The minister was delivering her budget speech to parliament and discussing in detail how the R4,7 billion allocation for 2011/12 will be spent. The largest share of the department’s budget – R1,2 billion – is allocated to food security and agrarian reform programmes. Agricultural production, health and food safety get R890 million, while R190 million goes to trade promotion and market access. Forestry gets R770 million and fisheries R324 million.
