Entry level wage cut mooted

17 Oct 2011
Both South Africa’s established commercial and emerging farmer sectors believe that an entry level wage cut, similar to that recently approved for the clothing and textile sector, would significantly benefit the agricultural industry. The clothing and textile sector, threatened with collapse, was able to successfully negotiate with labour unions and government for a 30% cut in minimum wages for new employees. Farmers said that a similar minimum wage model for the agricultural sector would create employment for the youth, increase production and improve the economic sustainability of the sector.
