Drought in Horn of Africa gets fatal

08 Jul 2011
More than 8 million people in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are in need of emergency assistance as severe food shortages follow the drought gripping the Horn of Africa. There have been deaths in Kenya as rural people fight over access to water. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said acute malnutrition is widespread after two consecutive seasons of significantly below-average rainfall. Crop production has failed, grazing resources are depleted and there has been significant livestock mortality.
