Drought could drive bread price up by 25%

05 Sep 2011
The impact of the weather on commodity prices is one of the main drivers of food inflation. Should adverse weather conditions in the US affect its wheat producing regions and if a drought then occurs in South Africa during the 2011/12 production season, bread prices could rise by 25,7%. This was according to a statement released by the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) under the leadership of Dr Ferdinand Meyer. The BFAP also compiles the annual South African Agricultural Baseline.
