Physical income and cost analysis
Summer grain
The actual total production cost is the summary of the actual happenings in the input environment. Input
prices are normally determined by the free market and cannot be changed by a single producer. Improved
efficiency and purchase management is the tool to manage the input cost price upswings. Improved
efficiency can only be achieved on farm level, but purchase management needs real time information.
Graphs 12 to 15
show the actual production cost, yields and profit/loss situation for maize of the North
West Province, Eastern Free State, North West Free State and KwaZulu-Natal since 2000/2001. The
actual production cost figures for the 2012/2013 production season were not available during the time that
this document was written. It is clear that production cost is increasing over time. The total production cost
per hectare for the different production areas did not increase that dramatically between the 2001/2002
and 2005/2006 production years, it stayed relatively stable. Since the 2006/2007 production year, total
production cost has increased year after year and producers are not in the position to pass these cost
increases to the consumer and therefore the reduction in profits per hectare is evident.
The graphs indicate that it was a relatively good production year for grain producers in the North West
Province, North West Free State and KwaZulu-Natal during the 2011/2012 production season, while
the Eastern Free State producers indicated a loss. Although the yields in the North West Province were
lower than the previous year, a small profit was still realised. The main reason for the loss in the Eastern
Free State can be ascribed to high total production cost together with below average yields.

is, is ‘n klein wins steeds behaal.
