Production conditions in the 2012/2013 production season (continued)
Crop estimate
Malting barley
According to the CEC, 81 320 hectares of malting barley were planted in the 2013/2014 production
season. This was 4,3% or 3 620 hectares less than in the 2012/2013 production season. According
to the CEC’s second winter crop production estimate, 280 961 tons can be produced and a yield of
3,5 tons per hectare can be expected. This will be the third highest average yield yet (

).
Canola
In the 2013/2014 production season 75 165 hectares of canola were planted – a drastic 31 065 hectares
more than in the previous season. According to the CEC’s second winter crop production estimate,
a crop of 113 001 tons is expected, which is a yield of 1,5 tons per hectare. This will not only be the
biggest canola area yet in South Africa, but also the biggest production produced until now (

).
Moutgars
Volgens die NOK is daar 81 320 hektaar moutgars in die 2013/2014-produksieseisoen aangeplant. Dit
is 4,3% of 3 620 hektaar minder as in die 2012/2013-produksieseisoen.

as in die vorige seisoen.

At several meetings Grain SA requested the CEC to release additional information on the provision of
crop estimates. This additional information is important to support and better explain the estimates.
Grain SA is excited about the supplementary information that is now released with the crop estimate
figures, as this promotes the transparency of the crop estimate. The CEC has agreed to also publish
the division of maize between dryland and irrigation, when the monthly production estimate figures
are released. We encourage you to visit the Grain SA website and click on our new “crop estimate
link” to view the following additional information:
1. Yields per magisterial district, as obtained from producers.
2. Data input providers that are taken into account every month.
3. Objectives of the CEC.
Oesskatting
3. Doelwitte van die NOK.
