Production conditions in the 2012/2013 production season (continued)
Produksie-omstandighede in die 2012/2013-produksieseisoen (vervolg)
Dry beans
During the past season, 43 550 hectares of dry beans were planted. This was an increase of
3 800 hectares compared to the previous season (
Graph 8
). According to the final CEC production
estimate for 2012/2013, a crop of 60 200 tons was produced, which was 26,2% more than in the
2011/2012 production season. An average yield of 1,4 tons per hectare was achieved, which
was higher than the yields over the past four years.
Wheat
An increasing gap is clearly discernible between South Africa’s wheat production and consumption.
Over a ten-year period (2004/2005 to 2013/2014*), local wheat consumption increased by 9,5%, while
the production of wheat dropped by 4,2%. Approximately 1,55 million tons of wheat therefore have to be
imported for the 2013/2014 production season to meet the local demand for wheat in South Africa. This
constitutes 51,2% of South Africa’s total local consumption and emphasises the necessity of imports.
For the 2013/2014 production season, 505 500 hectares were planted, which was 1,1% less than in
the 2012/2013 production season (
Graph 9
). According to the CEC’s second winter crop production
estimate for the 2013/2014 production season, 1,758 million tons of wheat are expected – 111 500 tons
less than in the previous production season. The high risk and profitability position of other summer
grain crops contributed directly to the decline in the annual plantings – particularly in the Free State.
Droëbone
Daar is 43 550 hektaar droëbone die afgelope seisoen aangeplant. Dit is ‘n toename van 3 800 hektaar
vergeleke met die vorige seisoen (
Grafiek 8
). Volgens die NOK se finale 2012/2013-produksieskatting is
‘n oes van 60 200 ton geproduseer, wat 26,2% meer as die 2011/2012-produksieseisoen is. ‘n Gemiddelde
