Local and international experts have agreed to participate in a local Sclerotinia research project
initiative. However, the only challenge is to find further funding for the project.
Sunflower disease survey project
There is a need to assess the sunflower disease situation in South Africa and identify the most
important species. A sunflower disease survey project was therefore launched to measure and quantify
sunflower diseases. This project is also important, because it can prioritise the most important diseases
in the sunflower industry as enquiries are received from producers. Results have shown that Alternaria
crown rot is found in almost all the locations where surveys were conducted.
Grain SA’s Conservation Agriculture Farmer Innovation Programme
Graan SA se Boere-innoveringsprogram vir Bewaringslandbou
To address concerns around excessively high soil degradation rates, profitability and poverty in
grain producing areas, Grain SA, supported by two commodity trusts (the Maize Trust and Winter
Cereal Trust) launched a Conservation Agriculture Farmer Innovation Programme (CA-FIP) to
mainstream conservation agriculture (CA) by and through grain farmers to ensure the sustainable
use and management of natural resources, while enhancing national and household food security
and income in South Africa.
The CA-FIP developed the following key strategic objectives (KSOs) to focus activities and funding:
a) Diagnosis and documentation of CA systems.
b) Awareness, marketing and access to information.
c) Farmer-centred innovation systems research.
d) Incentive and market based mechanisms (IMBMs).
e) Education and training.
f) Innovation platforms, networks, social learning, brokering and facilitation.
c) Produsent-gesentreerde innoveringstelselnavorsing.
