terwyl die verwagting is dat die tweede beste opbrengste vir die 2013/2014-seisoen afgehaal kan word.
Mielies
Mielie-aanplantings het met 3,0% vanaf die 2011/2012-produksieseisoen tot die 2012/2013-produksiesei-
soen toegeneem. Witmielie-aanplantings het met 1,2% afgeneem, terwyl die geelmielie-aanplantings met
9,5% uitgebrei het (sien

). Die witmielie-afname is hoofsaaklik die gevolg van die droë toestande
wat voorgekom het.

afgelope 20 jaar aan. Tydens die 2012/2013-produksieseisoen het witmielies 58,1% en geelmielies
41,9% van die totale mielie-oppervlakte uitgemaak. Die verhouding van geelmielies tot die totale mielie-
oppervlakte het gegroei en daar is nog verdere ruimte vir meer geelmielies in die Suid-Afrikaanse mark.
Volgens die Nasionale Oesskattingskomitee (NOK) se finale 2012/2013-somerproduksieskatting, is ‘n oes
van 11,722 miljoen ton mielies geproduseer. Alhoewel die produksieseisoen baie droog was in die Noordwes
Provinsie en sekere dele van die Vrystaat, het die produsente in die oostelike dele van die land baie goeie
oeste afgehaal. As gevolg van die ontsaglike moeilike en droë weersomstandighede, is die seisoen se
gemiddelde mielie-opbrengs die laagste in ‘n tydperk van ses jaar. ‘n Gemiddelde opbrengs van 3,5 ton
per hektaar is behaal teenoor verlede jaar se 4,1 ton per hektaar. Die witmielie- en geelmielieproduksie
asook die verhouding tussen witmielie- en geelmielieproduksie word in
Grafiek 3
aangetoon. Volgens die
NOK se finale 2012/2013-somerproduksieskatting bestaan die totale mielie-oes uit 47,6% witmielies en
52,4% geelmielies (
Grafiek 3
). Dit is die eerste keer sedert 1994/1995 wat die geelmielie-oes groter as die
witmielie-oes is.
Sorghum
Grafiek 4
toon duidelik dat die aanplantingstendens van sorghum sedert 1990 afwaarts is, alhoewel die
aanplantings vir die 2012/2013-produksieseisoen, 14 100 hektaar meer is as die vorige jaar. Die NOK se
finale produksieskatting toon dat daar ‘n totaal van 151 064 ton sorghum in die 2012/2013-produksieseisoen
geproduseer is. Ten spyte daarvan dat sorghum tradisioneel as ‘n betreklik geharde plant bekend staan, het
die impak van die droogte tog sy tol geëis. ‘n Gemiddelde nasionale opbrengs van 2,4 ton per hektaar is
behaal teenoor die 2,8 ton per hektaar van die vorige jaar.
Maize
Maize plantings increased by 3,0% from the 2011/2012 production season to the 2012/2013 production
season. White maize plantings decreased by 1,2%, while the yellow maize plantings expanded by 9,5%
(see
Graph 1
). The white maize decrease was mainly the result of the dry conditions that prevailed.

indicates the ratio between white and yellow maize plantings over the past 20 years. During
the 2012/2013 production season white maize constituted 58,1% and yellow maize 41,9% of the total
maize area. The ratio of yellow maize to the total maize area increased and there is still further room for
more yellow maize in the South African market.
According to the final 2012/2013 summer production estimate of the National Crop Estimates
Committee (CEC), a crop of 11,722 million tons of maize was produced. Although the production
season was very dry in the North West and certain parts of the Free State, the producers in the
eastern producing areas harvested very good crops. Because of the enormously difficult and dry
weather conditions, the average maize yield for the season was the lowest in a period of six years.
An average yield of 3,5 tons per hectare was obtained, compared to 4,1 tons per hectare in the
previous year. The production of white and yellow maize and the ratio between the white and yellow
maize production are shown in
Graph 3
. According to the CEC’s final 2012/2013 summer production
estimate the total maize crop comprises 47,6% white maize and 52,4% yellow maize (
Graph 3
).
This was the first time since 1994/1995 that the yellow maize crop surpassed the white maize crop.
Sorghum

clearly indicates that the area planted to sorghum has declined since 1990, although the
plantings for the 2012/2013 production season were 14 100 hectares more than in the previous year. The
final CEC production estimate showed that a total of 151 064 tons of sorghum were produced during the
2012/2013 production season. Despite the fact that sorghum is traditionally known as a relatively tough
plant, the impact of the drought did take its toll. An average national yield of 2,4 tons per hectare was
obtained, compared to 2,8 tons per hectare in the previous year.
