The seed industry
With the objective to increase transparency and competitiveness in the grain and oilseeds industry,
seed prices are monitored annually by Grain SA. The continuous increase in seed prices is becoming a
great concern to grain producers with seed prices currently increasing on a year-to-year basis for grain
and oilseeds. Seed is an important production input and consists of about 12% of a maize producer’s
variable production costs; therefore this increasing trend of seed prices is of concern.
Seed prices
The prices for the 2013/2014 production season were released by the respective seed companies in
May 2013. On an average basis, maize, soybean, sunflower and grain sorghum seed prices increased
by 7,0%, 9,9%, 14,3% and 18,1% respectively, compared with the previous season.
Since the 2001/2002 production season, the maize price index (
Graph 1
) weakened significantly in
comparison to the maize seed price index only to recover after the 2004/2005 production season. Maize
prices regained their strength up to 2007/2008 whereafter the prices weakened again. An estimated
average producer price
1
of R1 831 per ton for the coming season (2013/2014) means that the maize
price index will weaken again in relation to the maize seed price index. Seed is an important production
input and consists of about 12% of a maize producer’s variable production costs; therefore the
increasing trend of maize seed prices is of concern to Grain SA.
Grain SA therefore arranged meetings with various seed companies in order to address producers’ concern
about the extent to which seed prices are increasing on a continuous basis in relation to the maize price.
Saadpryse
Saad is ‘n belangrike
