Grain SA’s strategic research focus (continued)
Wheat
Wheat competitiveness study project
Grain SA, in collaboration with the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC), launched a project
to investigate and identify the factors that affect the competitiveness of wheat producers.
The study shows that macro-factors are the most restrictive environment for wheat producers in South
Africa, while the micro-environment has a somewhat restrictive, but almost neutral impact on the
competitiveness of producers. The meso-environment generally seems to have a neutral impact on
producers’ profitability, but this is also the environment in which possible adjustments to the benefit of
producers can be made. The results and primary restrictive factors on the macro-, micro- and meso-
environments were as follows:
Macro-level – regulations and legislation.
Micro-level – labour and inputs.
Meso-level – cultivars and research.

Training of developing producers for the biofuel plants
At the end of September the Department of Energy announced the implementation dates for the
compulsory blending of biofuel in South Africa’s local petroleum. A certain percentage of production
for the two biofuel plants must come from developing producers and Grain SA consequently trained
developing producers in sorghum production during the past season. Training took place after funds had
been received from the Agricultural Research Council (ARC).
Sunflower/soybeans
Sclerotinia
Sclerotinia in sunflower and soybeans has increased over the past few years. It increases during the
wet seasons in sunflower in particular and yields can be reduced by up to 80%.

Koring
Koringmededingendheidstudie-projek
meso-omgewing was as volg:

biobrandstof in Suid-Afrika se plaaslike petroleum, is einde September afgekondig. ‘n Sekere
