Since the active ingredients of locally formulated agricultural chemicals need to be imported, the level of the
exchange rate has a direct impact on local prices. The rand/dollar exchange rate weakened from R8,273
in August 2012 to R9,961 in August 2013. The international prices of four herbicides used on maize can
be seen in Table 7 in dollar, as well as rand terms. The international price of glyphosate, acetochlor and
atrazine increased by 40,1%, 2,0% and 16,4% respectively, while the prices of metolachlor decreased by
0,8% fromAugust 2012 to August 2013. The negative impact of the weakened rand can also be seen when
the dollar prices are converted to rand. The local herbicide prices of glyphosate, atrazine and S-metolachlor
increased by 48,1%, 28,0% and 8,8% respectively fromAugust 2012 to August 2013, while the local prices
of acetochlor stayed the same as the year before.

onkruiddoders wat op mielies gebruik word, kan in Tabel 7 in dollar- asook in randterme gesien word. Die
internasionale pryse van glifosaat, asetochloor en atrasien het vanaf Augustus 2012 tot Augustus 2013
onderskeidelik met 40,1%, 2,0% en 16,4% gestyg, terwyl die prys van metolachloor vanaf Augustus 2012
tot Augustus 2013 met 0,8% gedaal het. Die negatiewe impak van die verswakte rand kan ook gesien
word wanneer die dollarpryse na rand omgesit word. Die plaaslike onkruiddoderpryse van glifosaat,
atrasien en S-metolachloor het vanaf Augustus 2012 tot Augustus 2913 met 48,1%, 28,0% en 8,8%
onderskeidelik gestyg, terwyl die plaaslike prys van asetochloor dieselfde gebly het as die vorige jaar.
