Grain SA as preferred employer
The Organisation continually monitors the growth of staff through training. We cannot be leaders in
organised agriculture if our own personnel are not well-equipped. The ongoing improvement of the
quality of our skills pool is therefore essential.
The various regional offices are at present being upgraded to ensure that Grain SA’s offices in the
remote rural areas portray the same image as the head office.
Risks
The Organisation attempts to manage risks effectively. The report on corporate governance (see page
16 of this report) contains a breakdown of Grain SA’s approach to sustainability and risk management.
The following potential risks have been identified:
None of the parties taking part in the land-reform debate has so far succeeded in producing feasible
plans. The grain industry should continue to remain relevant in the debate and make renewed efforts
to develop sustainable solutions.
A new threat on the horizon is the government’s view that intervention in the free market is required
once more. The handling of such a topic by the government poses a serious threat to agriculture.
The sustainable funding of Grain SA is a risk. It keeps us relevant, but is a threat to the survival
of the Organisation and to maintaining proper capacity. The affordability of maintaining organised
agriculture in general will also have to be revisited.
The impact of climate change remains a risk to the grain industry. A change in weather patterns
like those experienced first-hand by producers during the past season makes the farming industry
difficult to predict, with a negative impact on profitability.
Labour unrest does not necessarily have a material impact on the grain industry in general, but
it can develop into a risk if producers do not maintain good labour practices and fair working
conditions.
The lack of public service delivery holds definite risks for producers and entails additional costs for
farming undertakings. Controlled prices for water, electricity, fuel and property rates are a potential
risk that has to be kept in mind.

met werkbare planne vorendag te kom nie. Die graanbedryf moet voortgaan om relevant tot die
debat te bly en ‘n hernude poging aanwend om volhoubare oplossings te ontwikkel.
‘n Nuwe bedreiging op die horison is die regering se siening dat inmenging in die vrye mark weer
moet plaasvind. Die hantering van so ‘n onderwerp deur die regering, hou ‘n geweldige bedreiging
vir landbou in.
Die volhoubare befondsing van Graan SA is ‘n risiko. Dit hou ons relevant, maar is ‘n bedreiging
vir die voortbestaan van die organisasie en om behoorlike kapasiteit in stand te hou. Die
bekostigbaarheid daarvan om georganiseerde landbou in die breë in stand te hou, sal ook
herbesoek moet word.
Die impak van klimaatsverandering bly ‘n risiko vir die graanbedryf. ‘n Verandering in weerspatrone,
soos wat produsente die afgelope seisoen eerstehands ervaar het, maak die boerderybedryf moeilik
voorspelbaar, met ‘n verswarende impak op winsgewendheid.
Arbeidsonrus het nie noodwendig ‘n wesenlike impak op die graanbedryf in die algemeen nie,
maar dit kan wel in ‘n risiko ontaard indien produsente nie goeie arbeidspraktyke en billike
werkstoestande in stand hou nie.
Die gebrek aan openbare dienslewering hou besliste risiko vir produsente in en bring addisionele
koste vir boerderyondernemings mee. Beheerde pryse op water, elektrisiteit, brandstof en
eiendomsbelasting is ‘n potensiële risiko om mee rekening te hou.
