Terugblik en strategiese oogmerke
Review and strategic objectives
In Suid-
rigting waarin landbou beweeg.
Groot mylpale is
The realisation of the biofuel industry in South Africa is a major objective that has been driven over many
years and that is now bearing fruit. It constitutes a massive stimulus for the commercial grain industry and
offers a strong benefit to developing farmers to cultivate sorghum, soybeans and perhaps canola as well.
The expansion of the local soybean processing capacity by way of the new crushing plants is an exciting
local development in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry. This is a channel through
which agronomic processing helps to create job opportunities. The government thus demonstrated
its willingness to cross the bridge to join hands with agriculture – which was a commendable strategic
moment. Now we are at the point where the traffic on the bridge should start to speed up.
An exponential growth potential exists for virtually every grain commodity over the next five years.
Strategically a record season therefore lies ahead, backed by a friendlier policy environment from the
Department of Trade and Industry. This is cause for gratitude, as the grain industry has made enormous
progress from the plant-less strategy of a few years ago to where we are now.
Leadership
Grain SA accepts its responsibility to raise agriculture to the level at which it should function. In South
Africa we are not only aiming at unity in agriculture, but also unity about agriculture.
The land-reform debate has not yet been completed. Grain SA made inputs over the past year, as our
role is not only to criticise, but also to produce feasible plans as innovator.
Our leadership role involves giving hope for the future and we demonstrate this through our investment
in the expansion of the NAMPO Harvest Day. Grain SA is growing with this and is thus confirming the
direction in which agriculture is moving.
