Agricultural Research Council.
The 250 Ton club, which was established in 2008, provides recognition to developing producers
whose harvest exceeds the 250 ton mark. Grain SA is excited about the fact that the membership
of this club is still increasing (see
Graph 2
on page 11). During the year under review, 26 producers
achieved the 250 ton limit, 19 the 500 ton limit, 15 the 1 000 ton limit, and one the 1 500 ton limit.
In the meantime, training is still done at farm level, the Schools Programme was carried out
successfully, study groups were run and the Eastern Cape now boasts of a third office.
New generation
The Grain Academy is a first-class project that was delivered for the first time this year in partnership
with Syngenta and the University of the Free State. High quality leadership training was thus provided
to young leaders in agriculture. An initiative to get producers and government officials together as new-
generation leaders, the Young Leaders Lab, was continued with great success in the year under review.
Members of Grain SA’s Executive also received training during meetings. This was aimed at enlarging
the frame of reference and skills of agricultural leaders.
Grain SA accepted the challenge to make two young economists part of the Industry Services division.
Funzani Sundani and Wandile Sihlobo are two dedicated young economists who add excellent value
with the aid of clever mentorship.
The Sasol Trust aims to fund a few students to obtain their doctorates overseas on the subject of
soybeans in order to accomplish exponential growth in the local capacity with respect to breeding,
resistance against diseases and crop rotation.

Intussen word opleiding op plaasvlak steeds gedoen, die skoleprogram is suksesvol uitgevoer,
studiegroepe word bedryf en die Oos-Kaap spog nou met ‘n derde kantoor.
Nuwe generasie
Die Graanakademie is ‘n eersteklasprojek wat vanjaar vir die eerste keer in vennootskap met Syngenta
en die Universiteit van die Vrystaat afgelewer is. Hoëkwaliteit leierskapsopleiding is sodoende aan jong
landbouleiers gebied. ‘n Inisiatief om produsente en regeringsamptenare as nuwegenerasie-leiers by
mekaar uit te bring, die Young Leaders Lab, is in die oorsigjaar met groot sukses voortgesit.
Lede van Graan SA se Hoofbestuur ontvang ook opleiding tydens vergaderings. Hierdeur word
landbouleiers se verwysingsraamwerk en vaardighede verbreed.
Graan SA het die uitdaging opgeneem om twee jong ekonome deel te maak van die Bedryfsdienste-
afdeling. Funzani Sundani en Wandile Sihlobo is twee toegewyde jong ekonome wat met behulp van
knap mentorskap, uitstekende waarde toevoeg.
Die Sasol Trust beoog om ‘n paar studente te befonds om hul doktorsgrade in sojabone in die buiteland
te gaan doen, ten einde eksponensiële groei in die plaaslike kapasiteit te bewerkstellig ten opsigte van
teling, siekteweerstand en gewasrotasie.
Graan SA as voorkeurwerkgewer
Die Organisasie moniteer deurlopend die groei van personeel deur opleiding. Ons kan nie leiers
in georganiseerde landbou wees as ons eie personeel nie goed toegerus is nie. Die deurlopende
verbetering van die gehalte van ons vaardigheidspoel is daarom noodsaaklik.
