The National Crop Estimates Committee (NCEC) proved their credibility over the past two seasons.
The NCEC has stood the test of time with the accuracy of their estimate over the past seasons.
Although the Safex transport differential has the potential to divide producers, Grain SA is still trying to
make the market more transparent. In the past year we tested the processes to create a more balanced
buyer/seller platform. The JSE’s decision to maintain the status quo with regard to the transport
differential, forced the industry to shift the focus to the basis trading of grains and higher logistical
efficiency to ensure greater transparency in the market.
Expansion of the demand side
Despite the criticism and scepticism regarding poor infrastructure in the country with respect to transport
and port facilities, more than 2 million tons of grain per year could be exported over the past three
years (Graph 1 ). This was a compliment to the trade and the operators running the transport and port
facilities, and formed an integral part of food security.
With Japan, Taiwan, Mexico and South Korea as the biggest buyers of South African grain during the
year under review, the local industry is becoming a strategically reliable supplier of food to countries that
import grain. New generation economies with a growing middle class are therefore the future buyers of
our products.

Die realisering van die biobrandstofbedryf in Suid-Afrika is ‘n groot mikpunt wat oor jare gedryf is en
wat nou vrug dra. Dit bring ‘n massiewe stimulus mee vir die kommersiële graanbedryf en bied ‘n sterk
voordeel aan ontwikkelende landbouers vir die verbouing van sorghum, sojabone en dalk ook kanola.
