The grain quality of the SADC region must improve and the food security index will have to be raised
dramatically. With the support of the SAGL – which is in the process of establishing a laboratory in
Zambia – and SAGIS, a basis for free-market principles, a crop estimate mechanism and the quality of
food is being laid for the region.
Production productivity
The initiative by the Industry Services division in the field of agricultural research has ensured a wind
of change with regard to research priorities in the grain industry. Major milestones were achieved by
linking networks and integrating research actions to eliminate duplication.
The monitoring of the availability, price and quality of input products remains part of Grain SA’s core
business. In the year under review, the Organisation carried out this important task conscientiously. As
far as the diesel rebate is concerned, the retention and fair audit of the rebate is strategically important
to producers. Although progress was made with the collective negotiation with SARS in this regard, the
matter has not yet been finalised.
Grain SA’s focus on conservation tillage gained momentum this year with the establishment of a
Conservation Agriculture Strategy, after which a Conservation Agriculture (CA) Committee was
established. Producers should be able to make well-informed decisions to switch to CA so that they can
eventually produce more with less.
Transformation
Grain SA’s participation in the government’s recapitalisation programme was a massive strategic
delivery point in terms of how it was handled and how successfully it was completed. Farmer
Development had the opportunity to show what they were made of and the division made its mark
as a credible and expert farmer development agent. An unqualified audit on the project ensured

Bewaringslandboustrategie, waarna ‘n Bewaringslandboukomitee (CA) gestig is. Produsente moet goed
ingeligte besluite kan neem om oor te skakel na CA, om eindelik meer met minder te kan produseer.
Transformasie
Graan SA se deelname aan die regering se herkapitaliseringsprogram was ʼn massiewe strategiese
afleweringspunt gewees – in terme van hoe dit hanteer is en hoe suksesvol dit afgehandel is.
Ontwikkelende Landbou het die geleentheid gehad om te wys wat in hulle steek en die afdeling het sy
merk gemaak as geloofwaardige en kundige landbou-ontwikkelingsagent. ‘n Ongekwalifiseerde oudit
op die projek, het vir die ouditeur-generaal se stempel van goedkeuring gesorg. ‘n Suksesvolle projek is
ook op versoek van die Landbounavorsingsraad uitgevoer.
