Terugblik en strategiese oogmerke
Review and strategic objectives
With proposed amendments to the Marketing Act it has become clear that the pool of corporate
expertise with respect to a state-controlled environment is limited. This presents a risk if the industry
adopts a new policy direction in which more control is exercised by the government.
Grain SA made provision for ending the year under review with a loss. Thanks to the positive growth
in investments and moderate savings, the financial year ended virtually in the black. In spite of a
challenging year in agriculture, the loyalty and support of our members remain heartening.
Because of the trend of more grain flowing around the traditional silo storage structures, Grain SA
had to adapt by changing the structure for collecting the R2/ton levy and appointing collection agents
(
Graph 3
). The challenge remains to align the budget allocations with the Organisation’s focus areas.
Future
If I look at the future, I see agriculture continuing despite issues like high input costs and poor service
delivery. I feel one can trust the goodwill of people and the strong demand side of the market, as the
market is stronger than politics and simply cannot be wrong. In my opinion, continuity and a growth in
momentum have developed in agriculture over the past three years.
Agriculture now has to invest in our new generation. Not that it was neglected in the past, but the focus will
have to shift. Unity in agriculture is critical and reform of organised agriculture is essential for the future.

Met voorgestelde aanpassings aan die Bemarkingswet, het dit duidelik geraak dat die korporatiewe
kundigheidspoel ten opsigte van ‘n staatsbeheerde omgewing beperk is. Dit bied ‘n risiko indien die
bedryf ‘n nuwe beleidsrigting inslaan waarin meer staatsbeheer toegepas word.
Graan SA het voorsien om die verslagjaar teen ‘n verlies af te sluit. Te danke aan ‘n positiewe groei
in beleggings en matige besparings, is die finansiële jaar bykans in ‘n positief afgesluit. Ten spyte
van ‘n uitdagende landboujaar is die lojaliteit en ondersteuning van ons lede ‘n riem onder die hart.
Weens die tendens dat meer graan rondom die tradisionele silobergingstrukture vloei, moes
Graan SA daarby aanpas deur die struktuur vir die invordering van die R2/ton heffing te verander
en deur ledebemarkers aan te stel (

). Die uitdaging bly steeds om begrotingsallokasies
met die Organisasie se fokusareas te belyn.
Toekoms
As ‘n mens na die toekoms verwys, sien ek iets van landbou wat voortgaan ten spyte van kwessies
soos hoë insetkoste en gebrekkige dienslewering. Ek reken ʼn mens kan jou vertroue stel in die
welwillendheid (
goodwill
) wat mense het én die sterk vraagkant van die mark, want die mark is sterker
as politiek en kan eenvoudig nie verkeerd wees nie. Oor die afgelope drie jaar het daar myns insiens
kontinuïteit en ‘n groei in momentum in landbou ontstaan.
