Planting of Bt corn expanded 60% in 2010

17 Mar 2011
Planting of the genetically modified (GM) Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn expanded heftily by 60 percent to 541,000 metric tons (MT) in 2010 as farmers continued to take on the yield benefits of the crop amid high prevailing corn price. As corn price steadied at P14 to P15 per kilo at farm gate, farmers further maximized planting advantage by shifting to Bt corn which gives a higher yield by around three metric tons (MT) per hectare.
