White maize plantings decreased by 6,6%, while the yellow
maize plantings expanded by 6,0% (see
Graph 1
on p 17).
The decrease in white-maize plantings can largely be
attributed to the fact that profitable maize cultivation
was under some pressure during planting.
Graph 2
indicates the ratio between white and yellow
maize plantings over the past 24 years. During the
2014/2015 production season white maize constituted 54,6%
and yellow maize 45,4% of the total maize area. The ratio
of white maize production to that of yellow maize can be
seen in
Graph 3
.
SORGHUM
Graph 4
shows that less sorghum has been planted since
1990. The sorghum area for 2014/2015 was 8 350 hectares
less than in the previous year. The final National Crop
Estimates Committee (CEC) production estimate showed that
116 500 tons of sorghum were produced during the 2014/2015
production season. Compared to the record average yield
of 3,36 t/ha in the previous season, the average yield in the
past year was only 1,65 t/ha due to the drought. This was the
second lowest yield in the past 16 years.

SORGHUM

word. Die sorghumoppervlakte vir 2014/2015 is 8 350 hektaar
minder as die vorige jaar. Die finale produksieskatting van die
Nasionale Oesskattingskomitee (NOK) toon dat 116 500 ton
sorghum in die 2014/2015-produksieseisoen geproduseer
is. Teenoor die rekord-gemiddelde opbrengs van 3,36 t/ha
verlede seisoen, is die gemiddelde opbrengs die afgelope
jaar weens die droogte slegs 1,65 t/ha. Dit was die tweede
laagste opbrengs die afgelope 16 jaar.
SUNFLOWER SEED
Producers reduced the sunflower plantings by 3,83%
from 598 950 hectares in the 2013/2014 production
season to 576 000 hectares in 2014/2015. The sunflower
crop was 660 900 tons, with an average yield
of 1,14 t/ha.
GROUNDNUTS
Graph 6
(p 20) shows that the area under groundnut
cultivation and production have declined from 1990/1991
to 2014/2015. Increasing labour costs, the price ratio be-
tween groundnuts and maize and the high capital costs
of mechanising contributed to this. A total of 5 875 more
hectares was planted in the 2014/2015 production season
than in 2013/2014. The average yield of 0,98 t/ha was the
second lowest yield in almost 20 years.
SOYBEANS
In the 2014/2015 production season the area under
soybeans increased by 36,7% compared to the previous
season. The plantings increased by a remarkable 189,1%
or 449 550 hectares since 2008/2009. According to the

die prysverhouding tussen grondbone en mielies,
asook die hoë kapitaalkoste van meganisasie het
hiertoe bygedra. Altesame 5 875 méér hektare is in die
2014/2015-produksieseisoen geplant as in 2013/2014.
Die gemiddelde opbrengs van 0,98 t/ha was die
tweede swakste in bykans 20 jaar.
SOJABONE
Die oppervlakte onder sojabone het in die 2014/2015-
produksieseisoen met 36,7% teenoor die vorige seisoen
toegeneem. Aanplantings het sedert 2008/2009 met ‘n
