BOERE-INNOVERINGSPROGRAM
► BL-verwante artikels oor ‘n wye verskeidenheid
onderwerpe was baie gewild.
► BL-bewusmaking gebeur op uitsoekgeleenthede soos
die jaarlikse KwaZulu-Natal-geenbewerkingskonferensie
en boeredae. Die tweede BL-konferensie in Ottosdal
(11 - 12 Maart 2015) was ‘n belangrike mylpaal (sien
Foto 1
op bl 15).
► Proewe ingevolge die Argentynse samewerkings-
ooreenkoms is suksesvol by Ottosdal en Kroonstad
doelwit beskou. Dr Hendrik Smith was betrokke by die
ontwikkeling van die nasionale BL-beleid, wat daarop
gemik is om die bemagtigingsomgewing te verbeter.
► Verskillende navorsingsprojekte is op plase
geïmplementeer. Hierdie projekte volg die
innoveringstelselbenadering, met produsente
wat sentraal tot die innoveringsproses staan.
Twee nuwe projekte in die Noordoos-Vrystaat
(Vrede en Reitz) is geïnisieer (sien

PRODUKSIE-OMSTANDIGHEDE IN DIE
2014/2015-PRODUKSIESEISOEN
Die 2014/2015-produksieseisoen het afgeskop met die
verwagting van gemiddelde tot bo-gemiddelde oeste in
die somergraanproduserende gebiede. Omstandighede
► Participation in national CA forums is seen as a major
objective. Dr Hendrik Smith was involved in two initiatives
on the development of national CA policy, which are
aiming to improve the enabling environment for CA
to flourish.
► The implementation and coordination of various on-
farm research projects are seen as a major milestone
in the expansion of the CA-FIP. These projects follow
the innovation systems approach with producers being
central to the innovation process. Two new projects in
the north-eastern Free State (Vrede and Reitz) have
been initiated (see

PRODUCTION CONDITIONS IN THE
2014/2015 PRODUCTION SEASON
The 2014/2015 production season started out with the
expectation of average to above-average harvests in
the summer cereal-producing areas. However, conditions
changed drastically and South Africa – especially the western
parts of the country – experienced an exceptionally harsh
and extended midsummer drought period. Maize, sunflower

as verlede jaar. Die garsaanplantings het met 10,1%
toegeneem hoofsaaklik weens nuwe kultivars in die mark
asook beter weersomstandighede in die Rûensgebied.
MIELIES
Mielie-aanplantings het met 1,3% vanaf die 2013/2014-
produksieseisoen tot 2014/2015 afgeneem. Witmielie-
and sorghum plantings decreased by 1,3%, 3,8% and 10,6%
respectively from the 2013/2014 production season to the
2014/2015 production season, while producers expanded their
plantings of soybeans, groundnuts, sorghum and dry beans.
Winter grain producers planted 1,2% more wheat and
10,1% more barley in the 2015/2016 production season
than in the 2014/2015 production season, while the canola
plantings decreased since last year, largely due to late rain
in the Swartland and low profit margins. Wheat plantings in
the Free State expanded by 15,1%, while the plantings in
the Western Cape were the same as last year. The barley
hectares increased by 10,1%, mainly due to new cultivars on
the market and better weather conditions in the Rûens area.
MAIZE
Maize plantings decreased by 1,3% from the 2013/2014
production season to the 2014/2015 production season.
