GSA Annual Report 2025

90 Grain SA Entity In 2025, the Commercial Producers Trust successfully continued its mandate to promote the interests of all grain producers and support sustainable growth in the grain industry. The trust plays a key role in financing and coordinating research projects aimed at enhancing the productivity, resilience, and sustainability of South African grain producers. A core function of the trust is the management of internal trust funds such as the Commercial Maize and Wheat Trust funds, which are allocated to research projects critical to producers. These projects include determining production costs, developing economic scenario analyses in collaboration with the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP), as well as research related to plant health. This funding is particularly important as it is considered cofunding, opening the door for additional support from other institutions and research funds. The trust’s involvement ensures that projects are not only technically feasible but also have a measurable impact on the sustainability and profitability of producers. In addition to internal funds, the trust is responsible for coordinating external funds and projects. These projects are funded by, among others, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in collaboration with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), as well as commodity trust funds such as the Maize Trust and the Oilseeds and Protein Development Trust (OPDT). These projects focus on key areas critical to the grain industry's sustainability, under themes including crop improvement, climate resilience, plant health, human capital, and food and nutrition security. The trust operates within a structured administrative framework where all different streams of funding are managed and reported separately. This transparent structure ensures that each project is monitored not only on its financial management but also for its substantive impact and contribution to the long-term sustainability of producers. The trustees conduct thorough corporate oversight, focusing not only on administration but also on the practical and strategic value of projects for producers. Grain SA’s Research Coordination department plays a central role in the effective management of these projects. The department facilitates coordination between various research institutions, commodity trust funds, and producers, ensuring that project goals are simultaneously academically, practically, and economically relevant. This integrated approach strengthens collaboration between research and production, ensuring that innovations and findings are quickly and effectively implemented by producers. Financially, the Commercial Producers Trust successfully executed its mandate in 2025, with stable investments and transparent management processes.
