79 PHAHAMA GRAIN PHAKAMA NPC THIS PICTURE FROM GOOGLE MAPS SHOWS THE FOOTPRINT OF THE PROGRAMME. The former self governing territories of Limpopo, Eastern Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have many producers on communal land, whereas the Western parts of Mpumalanga and the Free State have fewer numbers of producers with larger tracts of arable land (commercial farms). The North West province has an interesting combination of larger owned farms and blocks of communal land. However, the average size of communal land allocated to producers in the North West province is 15 ha, whereas on the eastern side of the country, the average access is 1 ha (perhaps in line with the productive value of land in the higher rainfall areas). Table 1 below shows the land that is used by the active producers in our programme, as well as the land that the producers have access to. This is only the arable land, and it is only ‘active’ producers – those who have attended various programme activities over the past two years. Statistics of producers in the PGP Programme The programme continues to grow as we constantly have producers joining, which is a testimony to the impact that the programme is having on the lives of producers. PGP producers are classified as follows: Subsistence – 0,5 ha to 10 ha of arable land being used
