61 ON-FARM RESEARCH VISITS Grain SA’s research team remains committed to farmer-led innovation through regular on-farm visits and collaborative trials. These visits, typically conducted once or twice per quarter, offer a vital platform to engage directly with producers, understand their challenges, and align research efforts with real-world needs. For instance, a visit to Viljoenskroon highlighted the value of conservation agriculture trials led by farmers, where sustainable practices are tested under local conditions to ensure both economic and environmental viability. Joining the team on one of the farm visit this year, to discuss pressing issues such as rising input costs, climate variability, and job creation potential in agriculture, were various stakeholders from the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), the Free State Department of Agriculture, and the MEC for agriculture in the Free State. A farm visit in Mpumalanga focused on biological applications and the effect of spray nozzles on the efficiency of sprayer applications. These on-farm engagements not only strengthen the link between research and practice but also inform the development of a national agricultural research agenda and assist with internal research prioritisation. FARMERS’ EMPOWERMENT DAYS AND IMBIZOS Grain SA’s Phahama Grain Phakama (PGP) Imbizo and information sessions in Lichtenburg, Bethlehem, Welkom and Ermelo brought farmers and stakeholders together under the theme “Vukuzenzele: Farmers driving change.” The events encouraged farmers to take initiative, ask questions, and shape the future of their farms. The Grain SA Research team delivered a presentation on pest, disease, and weed management, helping producers deepen their understanding of plant health challenges in grain crops. Farmers were introduced to the Diagnostic Clinic and encouraged to reach out for support when facing plant health issues. The sessions were so well received that farmers requested more, highlighting the value of expert engagement and tailored advice. Additional presentations covered climate smart practices, seasonal forecasting, and proactive crop management strategies. Each discussion reinforced the spirit of ‘Vukuzenzele’ – real progress begins when farmers lead the way. RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH ROAD SHOWS IN THE WESTERN CAPE.
