41 Tractor sales Graph 9 depicts what is currently happening with tractor sales in the South African market. Note that these figures exclude exports and include only local sales. Annual tractor sales during this period (1988 to October 2025) varied between a minimum of 2 207 units in 1992 and a maximum of 9 175 units in 2022. Tractor sales have shown strong growth in 2025, with 5 773 units sold between January and September – a 22% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The AGFACTS Tractor Sales Index has also risen steadily since January, reaching 1 090 in September, indicating a positive market trend. September alone saw 758 tractors sold, nearly 15% more than the previous year. Combine harvester sales, while more volatile, have also shown resilience. Although only eight units were sold in September (down from 17 last year), year-to-date sales are approximately 17% higher than in 2024. 800 600 400 200 0 210 000 190 000 170 000 150 000 130 000 110 000 90 000 70 000 50 000 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 Graph 9: Annual tractor sales. Graph 10: Total tractor fleet. Units Units Source: Grain SA Source: Grain SA Tractor fleet At the end of 2024, the country’s tractor fleet stood at 108 901 units (Graph 10). There has been a notable decrease in the size of the tractor fleet over the years (1983 to 2005) and then a slow but upward trend from 2006 to 2024; the main reason for that is the smaller summer and winter grain plantings over time, as well as the increased sales of bigger than average-sized (kW) tractors.
