Thousand ha or ton t/ha Area Production Yield 8. Canola Graph 8 illustrates the long-term trends in canola area planted, production, and yield in South Africa from the 1998/1999 to 2023/2024 production seasons. Over these 25 years, the canola industry has grown from a small niche crop to a key crop of the country’s oilseed complex. In the early 2000s, canola area planted fluctuated between 20 000 and 40 000 hectares, and from around 2010 onwards, the area began to expand more consistently as producers in the Western Cape embraced canola in crop rotation systems. The most rapid expansion occurred during the 2020/2021 to 2023/2024 seasons, when the area planted increased above 130 000 ha, with a 74% increase seen over the past decade, since 2014. The area planted is projected to increase further to 165 750 ha in 2024/2025, well above both the five- and ten-year averages of 118 916 ha and 97 571 ha, respectively. Production volumes followed a similar pattern. For much of the earlier seasons, total production remained below 100 000 tons. The most notable growth occurred after 2020, when production exceeded 200 000 tons, reaching a record 236 300 tons in 2023/2024 and projected to increase to 290 400 tons in 2024/2025. This is higher than the five-and ten-year average 220 000 tons and 159 557 tons, respectively. In 2023, canola was planted in only four provinces, with the Western Cape taking the lead by 233 500 tons, followed by the Free State with just over 2 000 tons. The red line represents the overall yield trends over the years. The average yield increased to 2,24 t/ha in 2023/2024 and is projected at 2,55 t/ha for 2024/2025, outperforming the five-year average of 2,41 t/ha and the ten-year average of 1,86 t/ha.
