PRODUCTION OVERVIEW 7. Barley Graph 7 illustrates the long-term trends in malting barley, including area planted, production and yield in South Africa from the 2000/2001 to 2024/2025 production seasons. Over the past two decades, the malting barley industry has shown steady growth and stability, supported by strong demand from the brewing industry and ongoing improvements in production practices and seed technology. In the 2023/2024 production season, the total area planted to malting barley was 107 600 ha, representing a 6 600 ha increase from the 2022/2023 season. This increase in area contributed to an estimated total production of 377 000 tons, with an average yield of 3,5 t/ha. Although yields remained consistent with the previous season, the slight expansion in planted area supported overall production growth. For the 2024/2025 season, the area planted is projected to decline slightly to 100 700 ha, with production expected to reach 372 250 tons. The average yield is forecast to remain stable at 3,5 t/ha, aligning closely with both the five-year average of 3,58 t/ha and the ten-year average of 3,5 t/ha. Despite year-to-year fluctuations, long-term trends show clear improvement in both yields and total production.
