Sunflower seed Graph 3 illustrates the long-term trends of the area planted, production and yields of sunflower seed from 1990/1991 until the 2024/2025 production season. Total sunflower production (represented by turquoise bars) has fluctuated rather than followed a consistent growth trend, rising sharply in the late 1990s, declining in the early 2000s, and stabilising in recent years at around 600 000 to 850 000 ton. Yields have generally improved over time, reaching their highest levels during the 2019/2020 production season and decreasing ever since. The current yields for the 2023/2024 season have decreased and are projected to be higher next season. The total area planted decreased by 26 700 ha from the 2022/2023 season to the 2023/2024 season (529 000 ha) and is projected to increase to 555 700 ha in the 2024/2025 season. This is lower than the 5-year average of 557 780 ha and ten-year average of 576 030 ha. The Free State remains South Africa’s leading sunflowerproducing region, followed by North West and Limpopo.
