GSA Annual Report 2025

120 In a world full of turmoil, uncertainty and challenges, grain and oilseed producers can be assured that they have a voice in the grain industry: a voice that cannot be ignored or silenced, a voice that lives the passion for grain farming from the heart of the Jacaranda City across the country. At its annual Congress in 2025, Grain SA reaffirmed and emphasized the organisation’s raison d’être: To ensure that every grain producer can farm sustainably and profitably in South Africa. To achieve this goal, however, it is necessary to understand at the grassroots level – or rather farm level – what the stone in the producer’s shoe is. Grain SA’s leadership and personnel team undertake an annual visit to all the grain-producing regions of the country. During the year’s 44 regional meetings, 1 253 producers were ‘visited’ in person. The regional meetings are not only held to shake hands and to show their faces but are also an opportunity for each producer to present their unique situation to the leaders, economists, researchers, marketers and experts at Grain SA and to convey their concerns about the challenges in the industry. This gives producers the opportunity to ask questions about what is going on behind the scenes, and to voice their opinions on the state of affairs in the industry. Issues raised Extremely important and challenging issues such as land expropriation and reform, pest control operator (PCO)-certification, banned agrochemicals, and challenges with wheat import tariffs were raised during the meetings. Many producers find it challenging to stay afloat in the volatile markets and stay informed of what is happening. Grain SA was able to provide feedback here on how the alternative differential that is currently being tested on soybean contracts, are applied. Regarding soybeans, the question was also asked whether the new 100-ton contract was really necessary and what growing pains can be expected in the market. The visits to producers highlighted the importance of relationships with government, industry associates, agents and role players. These relationships enable Grain SA to speak on behalf of the producer at industry forums including; the national crop estimates liaison committee, the JSE, government departments, input suppliers, milling operations and presses as well as various other role players whose decisions have an impact on the producer's operations. Through Grain SA's close ties with other agricultural organisations and government, important matters can be conveyed easily and quickly to the relevant parties. Grain SA: The ear that hears Regional meetings 2024/2025 The annual regional meetings not only provide an opportunity for producers to highlight problems and challenges, but also for Grain SA to provide feedback on various developments in the industry.
