‘Agriculture and politics inseparable’ – minister

05 Oct 2011
Agriculture in South Africa is still divided along racial lines. To deal with the uneven distribution of landownership between whites and blacks, land reform has to be successful or the country might face Zimbabwe-style land grabs, said the minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, Tina Joemat-Pettersson at Agri Mega Week 2011 in Bredasdorp. At a workshop on the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) she said that since 1994, government has transferred less than 5% of agricultural land to blacks and there have been very few successes in establishing black commercial farmers.
