Production research and development
Produksienavorsing en -ontwikkeling
An Argentinian delegation visited South Africa in August
to review the collaboration project with Grain SA. A senior
researcher was appointed to improve the technical outputs
of the project. Three sites were selected for demonstration
trials in the 2013/2014 season.
Participation in national CA forums is regarded as a
major objective. Dr Smith was invited to the national
LandCare conference to do a presentation and act as
facilitator. He shared his LandCare experiences of the
past two decades. The CA project that is currently run in
collaboration with Mr Nicolas Madondo, CA-FIP producer
facilitator, was nominated as the best LandCare project
(see
Photo 6
on page 19).
New research projects on farms are regarded as a major
milestone in the expansion of the CA-FIP. These projects follow
the innovation systems approach, with producers being
central to the innovation process (

and

on page 19).
Crop Estimates Committee
Grain SA requested the National Crop Estimates Committee
(NCC) at several meetings to release additional information like

afgelope twee dekades gedeel.

Tabelle 1

op bladsy 18)
vry te stel. Dit kan deursigtigheid van oesskatting bevorder en
die geloofwaardigheid van die syfers versterk. Produsente word

graanprodusente toeganklik is. In die langtermyn sal hierdie
benadering alle ander oopbestuifde gewasse in Suid-
Afrika bevoordeel.
siektebestandheid, abiotiese stres en prestasiegapings;
bewaringslandbou; beleidsbeïnvloeding wat graanpro-
duksie raak; diagnostiese dienste; samewerking met
saadmaatskappye asook voedselveiligheid en opspoor-
baarheid.
GRAAN SA SE BOERE-INNOVERINGSPROGRAM
VIR BEWARINGSLANDBOU
Graan SAhet saammet dieMielie- enWintergraantrusts ‘n Boere-
innoveringsprogramvir Bewaringsboerdery (BIB-BL) bekendgestel
om kommer oor oormatige hoë grond-degradasievlakke,
winsgewendheid én armoede in graanproduserende gebiede

bewaringslandbou (WCCA) in Kanada bygewoon.
technology is accessible to all local grain producers. In the
long term this approach will be beneficial to all other open-
pollinated crops being produced in South Africa. Through
continued collaboration with stakeholders provision was
made for the regulatory systems that are adapted to our
country’s needs.
The grading regulations for soybeans and wheat in terms
of the Agricultural Product Standards Act (1990) were
amended without producers having been discriminated
against. Grain SA gave inputs with respect to the
amendment of export standards for maize in particular.
Key research focus areas
Grain SA’s key research areas include the control of
pests and diseases; breeding for better yields, resilience
against disease, abiotic stress and performance gaps;
conservation agriculture; influencing of policies involving
grain production; diagnostic services; cooperation with
seed companies, and food safety and traceability.
CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE FARMER
INNOVATION PROGRAMME
Grain SA, together with the Maize and Winter Cereal Trusts,
established a Conservation Agriculture Farmer Innovation
Programme (CA-FIP) to address concerns about excessive
soil degradation levels, profitability and poverty in grain-
producing areas.
Progress and major achievements
The development of a Grain SA CA working group involves a
variety of national and international stakeholders (
Photo 1
).
The publication of the successful CA management
practices (of producers) in various regions seems to be
highly relevant. Agricultural magazines are involved to
accelerate this process.
Awareness of CA is accelerated through prestige events
like the annual KwaZulu-Natal no-till conference and various
farmer days (
Photos 2
,
3
and

). The CA conference in
Ottosdal (12 - 13 March 2014) was a great success (

on page 19). Dr Hendrik Smith and three producers attended
the sixth world congress on conservation agriculture (WCCA)
in Canada.
