Western Cape spends big on agricultural research

The Western Cape provincial government’s agriculture budget for 2011/12 indicates that spending on agricultural research will increase to R100 million toward the end of 2014. The agriculture department was allocated R501,7 million of the province’s R36,5 billion budget – a 17% increase. Provincial agriculture minister Gerrit van Rensburg said the department will be spending R78 million on research during the next financial year. This is set to increase to R90 million in 2012/13 and to R96 million in 2013/14.
