News statement by NAMC: Request for the continuation of statutory measures: Weekly records and returns for imports and exports of whole maize and wheat

The current statutory measures with regard to weekly records and returns by end-consumers, importers, storers, exporters and processors, for imports and exports of whole maize and whole wheat, will expire on 30 April 2008. To enable SAGIS to continue its functions, SAGIS requested that the relevant statutory measures be continued for a further period of 8 years, to lapse on 30 April 2016. The Minister of Agriculture referred the request to the National Agricultural Marketing Council to investigate the possible continuation of the relevant statutory measures and to report back to her within 60 days. It is envisaged that explanatory notes regarding the proposed continuation of the statutory measures will also be published in the Government Gazette of 16 November 2007 for further information, if required. Directly affected groups in the grains and oilseeds industries are kindly requested to submit support, comments or objections regarding the proposed continuation of the statutory measures to the National Agricultural Marketing Council in writing (fax 012 341 1811/ 012 341 1911 or e-mail to lizette@namc.co.za) before or on 30 November 2007 to enable the Council to formalise its recommendation to the Minister in this regard.
