Namibia to replace chicken imports

09 Sep 2011
A R500 million Namibian broiler project aims to replace all chicken imports from SA. Consortium NMI is constructing the farm, which will be operated by subsidiary Namib Poultry Industries (NPI). Production is scheduled to start in March 2011, while the first parent stock will be brought in as early as October. “The farm will slaughter 250 000 chickens a week, which can be scaled up to 500 000/week in phase two,” said NPI GM Gys White. “At any time there will be 1,25 million chickens on the farms aged one to five weeks.” This output could replace Namibia’s total imports from Cape producers, most notably Country Fair and Rainbow, said NPI.
